Use the calculator below for any other start date. It also shows today's day number and the LIVEHARD phase windows that follow.

Is January 1 a good day to start 75 Hard?

January 1 is popular because the fresh start of a new year makes goals feel achievable, and it gives you a clean finish in mid-March. The trade-offs are New Year's Eve the night before, the coldest weeks for the outdoor workout and the mid-January motivation slump. With a December prep plan, all three are manageable.

Researchers have a name for the January pull: the fresh start effect. Dai, Milkman and Riis (2014) found people are more likely to pursue goals after landmarks like a new year, month or week. That means a Monday start, such as January 4, 2027 (day 75 on March 19), works for the same reason, if you want New Year's Day to recover.

What are the 75 Hard rules?

For 75 days in a row: follow a diet of your choice with no cheat meals and no alcohol; do two 45-minute workouts, one of them outdoors; drink one gallon of water; read ten pages of a non-fiction book; and take a progress photo. Miss any task, on any day, and you start again at day 1.

75 Hard was created by Andy Frisella. This is our plain-English summary; the full rules and clarifications, including what counts as outdoors and as reading, are on our rules page. For official answers, check 75hard.com or the official app.

How should you prepare for 75 Hard in December?

Use December as a four-week rehearsal. Each week, add one rule at a time, so by late December you are doing most of the program before it counts. Choose your diet, buy your books and gear, and plan the first two weeks of workouts so January 1 is a continuation, not a shock.

A four-week December prep plan

Week Dates (2026) Add this
1 Dec 1 to 6 Drink the full gallon daily. Pick your diet and write it down.
2 Dec 7 to 13 Read ten pages a day. Buy or borrow your first three books.
3 Dec 14 to 20 Do one 45-minute outdoor workout daily, whatever the weather.
4 Dec 21 to 31 Add the second workout on at least four days. Take daily photos. Plan January's workouts.

Holidays fall in week four, so treat that week as practice for the real thing: one event, one plan.

Gear and setup checklist

How do you do the outdoor workout in January?

Dress in layers, choose a time with daylight where possible, and keep it simple: a brisk walk, a run or a hike counts. Plan a safe indoor-adjacent fallback for ice. A garage or covered patio does not count as outdoors under the program's own clarifications, so the workout has to be in the open air.

Keep safety first. Health writers flag 90 minutes of daily exercise with no rest days as demanding, especially for beginners, and the official program tells you to consult a physician before starting. Icy roads, wind chill and darkness add risk in January: wear reflective gear, choose cleared routes and dress for the wind chill, not the thermometer. Cleveland Clinic discusses the risks and gentler alternatives. This is not medical advice.

Why do people restart 75 Hard in January?

Most January restarts come from the same few traps: alcohol at a celebration, forgetting the progress photo, finishing the gallon too late, or skipping the outdoor workout on a bitter day. All are planning failures rather than willpower failures, and each one can be prevented with a rule written down in December.

If you do miss a task, the rule is a restart at day 1. Our failed and restart guide covers what to change before you go again.

Should you do 75 Hard or 75 Soft in January?

Choose 75 Soft if you are new to exercise, coming back from injury or unsure about the strict diet and two daily workouts. It keeps a similar structure with more flexibility. Choose 75 Hard if you already train regularly and want the strict version. Either way, a version you finish beats one you abandon.

What should you do after March 16, 2027?

Plan day 76 before day 1. Decide which habits you will keep, such as the daily workout, reading or the alcohol-free weeknights, and whether you will continue into the LIVEHARD phases starting as early as March 17. A plan for after the challenge is what turns 75 days into a lasting change.

Our guide to life after 75 Hard covers the options.

Frequently asked questions

What day is day 75 if I start 75 Hard on January 1, 2027?

Tuesday, March 16, 2027. Your start date is day 1, so add 74 days. Because 2027 is not a leap year, the date is the same as in other non-leap years. A Monday, January 4 start finishes on Friday, March 19.

Can I start 75 Hard on New Year's Day after drinking on New Year's Eve?

Alcohol before day 1 does not count against the program, but a hangover makes two workouts and a gallon of water much harder. Many people start on Monday, January 4, 2027 instead, which still uses the fresh-start energy of the new year.

Is it too late to start 75 Hard if I miss January 1?

No. Any day works; the rules do not depend on the calendar. Each new week and month is another fresh start. Use the calculator to see your day 75 for any start date.
