Missing a day stings. It also gives you the most useful data you have: exactly where your plan broke.

What happens if you fail 75 Hard?

You start again at day 1. 75 Hard has no partial credit or make-up days: miss any task, on any day, and the count resets. The official program frames the restart as part of the lesson, not a punishment. In the LIVEHARD phases, failing Phase 1 or 2 restarts that phase, while failing Phase 3 restarts everything.

The official app's version history notes that it no longer pushes you back to day 1 automatically; you choose when to restart. The rule is the same, but you control the timing.

Should you restart 75 Hard the next day?

If you know why you missed and can fix it, restarting the next day keeps momentum. If you are injured, ill or burnt out, take a defined break with a fixed restart date. Either way, change one thing about your set-up first; a restart with the identical plan usually breaks in the same place.

Use the calculator to see your new day 75, and the tracker restart button to reset your grid.

How do you find out why you failed?

Write down the exact task, the day and the circumstance: "Day 40, second workout, late meeting, did not plan." Most misses fall into a few patterns: no time slot, a social event, travel, illness or forgetting to log. Each pattern has a specific fix, and the fix is usually logistics, not willpower.

What broke Fix for attempt two
Second workout squeezed out Book both workouts the night before; do the outdoor one early
Social event with food or drink Decide what you will order before you go; eat first
Travel Pack the book, a bottle and a hotel-room or walking workout
Illness Talk to a doctor; restart when well, not while sick
Forgot the photo or reading Same time and place daily, plus a reminder
Forgot to log it, unsure if done Tick the tracker immediately after each task

Does failing 75 Hard mean you are not disciplined?

No. A single miss is information about your plan, not a verdict on your character. Habit research found that missing one opportunity did not materially affect the habit-forming process. The program restarts you anyway because its goal is a perfect run, but your progress in reading, training and self-trust does not vanish.

Source: Lally et al. (2010). What does damage progress is the spiral after a slip: "I already failed, so today does not matter." Cut that off by doing every task the same day you miss, even before you officially restart.

When should you switch to 75 Soft instead of restarting?

Switch if you have failed several times at the same point for reasons that will not change, such as a job with unpredictable hours, or if you need rest days for health or injury. 75 Soft keeps the daily structure without the reset. Calling it a new challenge with a new day 1 keeps it honest.

Frequently asked questions

Can you restart 75 Hard as many times as you want?

Yes. There is no limit on attempts. The official app keeps a record of every attempt, per its listing. Each restart is a chance to fix the specific problem that ended the last one, so write down that problem before day 1 of the next attempt.

Do you lose your progress if you fail 75 Hard?

Your day count resets, but the fitness, reading and habits you built remain. You also learned exactly which part of your day is fragile. Keep your old tracker or CSV so you can compare attempts and see where you got further.

Is it OK to pause 75 Hard for illness or injury?

The program has no pause; any miss means a restart. If you are ill or injured, follow medical advice, stop the attempt and restart when you are well. The official FAQ advises consulting a doctor before starting, and the same sense applies when something goes wrong mid-way.
